Buying a used box truck: what to check on an Isuzu NPR, Ford E-Series or Chevy cutaway

Box trucks move Houston: furniture, appliances, inventory, event gear. A used one gets your business on the road for a fraction of a new truck — if you buy the right size and check the parts that work hardest.

Size the box to the work

• Box length (commonly 12 to 26 feet) decides how many trips you make. Measure your typical load, not your biggest one.
• Liftgate or ramp. A working liftgate saves time and injuries on heavy items. Test it fully loaded if you can, and listen for a struggling hydraulic pump.
• Roll-up vs swing doors. Roll-up doors work at tight docks; swing doors seal better.

GVWR is a spec, not a guess

Each truck has a gross vehicle weight rating on its label, and our listings show the weight class decoded from the VIN where it applies. What license, registration or permits apply to your use depends on the truck, what you tow and your situation — check with the Texas DMV or DPS before you buy, not after.

The cab-forward trucks (Isuzu NPR and similar)

These trucks are built to work: tight turning, great visibility, diesel or gas engines. Inspect:

1. Cold start and exhaust. No heavy smoke, no hard starting.
2. Diesel emissions system on newer diesels (DPF/regeneration history).
3. Clutch or transmission behavior under load.
4. Frame rails and crossmembers for cracks, especially behind the cab.
5. Box floor, roof and walls for leaks — look up inside with the door closed for daylight.

Cutaways (Ford E-Series, Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana)

Van front ends with a box behind: familiar to drive and cheaper to service. Check rear axle and brakes, since they carry the load, plus the seal where the box meets the cab.

Records are worth money

Oil changes, brake jobs and fleet maintenance logs make a used box truck easier to trust and easier to resell. Ask for them.
