Choosing a used work pickup: F-150 vs Super Duty vs Silverado vs Ram

The best used work truck is the one sized to your job. Too little truck wears out early; too much truck burns money every mile. Here is how our team helps contractors, landscapers and fleet buyers choose.

Half-ton or heavy-duty?

  • Half-ton (Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra 1500): daily driving, light towing, crew transport, tools in the bed. More comfortable and usually more efficient.
  • Heavy-duty (Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty, Silverado 2500/3500, Ram 2500/3500): heavy trailers, equipment, service bodies and constant loads. Stronger frames, axles and brakes.

Check the towing and payload ratings for the exact configuration — they change with cab, bed, engine and axle ratio.

Gas or diesel?

Diesels shine when you tow heavy and often, and they hold value. Gas engines cost less to buy and maintain when the truck mostly runs empty or light. On any diesel, ask about the emissions system and service records.

Cab and bed

Regular cabs are the most capable per dollar; crew cabs carry the crew. A long bed fits sheets of material flat; a short bed parks easier. Service bodies and flatbeds are worth it only if they fit your trade.

What to inspect

  1. Hitch, receiver and wiring — signs of heavy towing tell you how the truck lived.
  2. Bed and tailgate for dents and rust under any liner.
  3. Suspension — sagging rear springs or aftermarket lifts deserve questions.
  4. 4x4 engagement in a lot, if equipped.
  5. The VIN — every listing shows it; check recalls with NHTSA.

Next steps

Ford is the brand we stock most. Browse every truck in stock and ask an advisor for the out-the-door price of the one you like. Need a specific setup? Place a special order.
